Review: Allen Carr: The Easy Way to Quit Cannabis by Allen Carr

2026-04-282 min read

The Easy Way is a surprisingly useful tool. In short, the key is to convince yourself that you don't actually want to take the substance, making it a breeze to get rid.

I don't think The Easy Way works for cannabis; the entire premise is to convince yourself that there are no benefits from taking it. This is not true, there are plenty of research backed therapeutic uses for cannabis. The Easy Way's simplification of "dope" to a substance that has absolutely no benefits to its consumer, completely falls short in 2026 - where we know cannabis' medical uses are legitimate.

The book would work much better with an actual, in-depth, rigorous explanation of the main chemicals in cannabis that provide its psychoactive & medical effects. THC is the chemical that is psychoactive, this is what you are addicted to. Not the plant itself! When CBD is present, at rates comparable to the THC content, it completely changes the effect of cannabis on the user, nullifying the effects stemming from the THC specifically, by changing how THC binds to your endocannabinoid receptors.

The science behind cannabis usage in medical settings being completely ignored fails the book & its teachings. We need to view this substance with the nuance it deserves, rather than calling it "dope" and acting like there are no benefits to its consumption. The book signs off saying "don't believe things you hear or read about cannabis that conflicts with The Easy Way", which is an insane take & frankly completely loses me. I hope to take the teachings from this book, to use them to improve my life & others, but you cannot pretend such a nuanced issue is so black & white. Or, maybe just I can't. Especially, when that would mean ignoring advice from medical professionals.
